Anger

Anger is a problem when people are explosive, damaging property, using verbal abuse, and threatening or physically harming family members. The person who loses control to Anger often feels ashamed and resolves to act differently, but this pattern is very difficult to break without help.

Adults may experience feelings of constant threat. Kids and teens may be aggressive at school or escape through substance use, avoid home or begin to act out through self-harm and risk-taking behaviour. Physical injury is a very real danger.

How we will work with Anger:

When Anger has interfered in relationships the situation can be very serious.

It will usually take several consultations, closely spaced, to get a handle on things again. Family members should expect to meet

between 8 and 12 times, weekly at first, with more space between meetings as things improve.

I will help everyone create a safety plan, including the person who is most angry. Anger has serious consequences for the person who most loses control- toxic feelings of self-loathing and disappointment can truly poison that person's sense of self.

If there is risk of harm to a child, I will take steps to get outside support in place. This does not mean children will be removed automatically; but a worker may begin to visit the family home in order to help keep things safe.

It may be best for the adults to have separate counsellors at first. I will help with that. I may also meet with children or youth on their own, to help them sort their feelings without fear of upsetting the adults.

Anger can be put in it's proper place!! It is so important not to give up hope, even when things are at this point- remembering what brought you together can rebuild your relationship, and get you to a better place!
